Getting to know Sarah!
Sarah is a 3rd year PhD student in the Jon-Paul Maria group at PSU. Her anticipated graduation date is April 2021. The CDP asked Sarah the following to get to know her a little better!
What do you most enjoy about being a part of CDP?
My favorite aspect of CDP is the consistent interaction with both the member companies and the other students. It is exciting to hear how the member companies plan to implement the technology we are developing and to assist them with any challenges they face. Since CDP is relatively small, we are able to develop close relationships and meet frequently.
Tell us a little about your current research for the CDP.
I am studying low-temperature (< 300ºC) densification of ceramics, specifically the cold sintering process. I have focused on gaining a better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of this process and in doing so, I was able to introduce a new class of non-aqueous, flux-based transport phases, which significantly expanded the set of materials amenable to cold sintering. Recently, I have been applying this knowledge in order to densify functional magnetic and optoelectronic materials.
What are your plans/goals after graduation?
My goal after graduation in the spring is to find a job in industry. I enjoy having new daily challenges to solve and opportunities to contribute to tangible products.
What do you like to do outside of work? What are your hobbies?
Outside of work I like to hike with my dog, cook, and travel. I love spending time outdoors and exploring new places!
Any interesting facts that we should know about you?
I also like to dance and taught tap dance classes throughout high school and college!
