2004 Buessem Award Recipient
Detlev Hennings studied chemistry at the University of Saarbrücken, Germany, graduating with a Ph.D. (Thermodynamics of Ferrites) in Physical Chemistry in 1967. In 1969, after working for two years as a research assistant at the University of Saarbrücken, Dr. Hennings accepted a position at Philips Laboratories in Aachen, Germany.
During Dr. Hennings’ career at Philips, he was responsible for innovation of electronic ceramic materials: BME-MLCC, PTCR, VDR, piezo-, microwave ceramic; and powder synthesis. After 32 years, he retired as a Research Fellow from Philips Research Laboratories in 2001. In his time at Philips Research, he published 52 (reviewed) journal papers, mainly (16) in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society. He gave numerous invited papers at international conferences (ACerS, IEEE, etc.). He holds 26 patents (so-called international “patent families”).
Since retirement, Dr. Hennings spent several months as a visiting scientist at the Materials Research Laboratory, The Pennsylvania State University, in 2002. He serves as a scientific consultant to the Philips Lighting Division and CNI (Center of Nanoelectronic Systems for Information Technology) in Juelich, Germany.
The Center for Dielectric Studies presented the Wilhelm R. Buessem Award to Dr. Hennings at the CDS Awards Dinner on October 28, 2004.
